Yes Men

2 05 2012

Yes Men was a very entertaining movie to me, for a while, but it soon lost its taste. I feel the movie would have been much better had it lasted, say, forty-five minutes, but the further the Yes Men brought us into their film, the more I started to think they were not much more than immature douche bags. I respect everything they did with the ‘Golden Skeletons’ and the fake BBC report, but after those two sequences, they just seemed to spiral downward in their lies and it simply became childish. I agree with what they try to do, but I feel they should start to realize when enough is enough and take a defeat.

Audience

2 05 2012

Originally, I feel like my audience was sort of lacking, being that Nick and my idea did not really have a lot too it. It was a simple video that we probably would have put on Facebook and receive karma in the form of ‘likes.’ Now, our project actually has a clearly defined audience, as the incoming students, and others who may not know where to skate on campus.

Did I Achieve My Goals?

2 05 2012

This is kind of a weird question to answer. I certainly feel that I achieved in creating a worthy project that could very well be applied in the real world, or at the least the University of Maine world. In spite of this Nick and I really created a video that was not really what either of us had expected. We went into this project thinking we would make a video and mostly try to accomplish cool visual effects with it. This would have been a fun project, but did not really fit the assignment. It really had no direction, other than being a video.

We tried to create a project that could actually be used in the world around us, something that could actually serve a purpose. That is when we had the idea of an interactive map, using the help of the website Prezi, that could show the local students where to skate on campus.

I feel like this new direction was a good change, and I’m happy to have learned to think of new ways in which to give my work a ‘purpose.’

Autobotography Example: Where the Hell is Matt?

2 05 2012

This may easily be one of my favorite examples of autobotography. The creator takes a collection of all of the amazing places in the world that he has encountered in his life, and from it, creates a very fun and honestly awe-inspiring video. He is able to show all of the incredibly beautiful and unique places that we have on our planet. He was able to even evoke a bit of remorse out me, as I wonder why I don’t have the opportunity to see all of these things, and experience life to the level that Matt has.

Autobotography Example: Noah Takes a Photo of Himself

2 05 2012

This is a famous viral video that is most definitely an example of autobotography. The creator, “Noah” dedicates six years of his life to record the transformation that we go through as humans. It is definitely in the sense of autobotography, as he has created it himself, and shows the changes he himself undergoes throughout these six years.

Hactivism Example: Occupy Wall Street

2 05 2012

One of the best examples of hactivism, at least in our current time is that of the Occupy Movement. Occupy is hactivism because it breaks into the open and speaks the word of how the world should be working. They go out into public places, and do not inflict any harm, rather they celebrate being in a society work to change the world, so that we may see how real human interaction and human life were meant to work.

Hactivism: Anonymous

2 05 2012

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eliFEfCgZ-U&feature=fvst

Anonymous is a secretive hactivism group that is widely known for hacking into some of the most secure systems in the world, and fighting back, as the say, for the people. This video relates to the negative feedback Anonymous received after they shut down the PlayStation Network due to processes Sony did with the Network that many believe to be unnecessary, such as storing IP Addresses of users. Anonymous held control over the PlayStation Network for several weeks, as a means to severely hurt the income of Sony, but as you can see, some do not agree with the reaches Anonymous will make to fight for the people.

Hactivism: Chalk Protest

2 05 2012

I was thinking of an idea of writing in large letters “What is wrong with this University?” in chalk in front of the Union, and then leaving a large box of chalk, allowing for people to vent and complain about any problems they have with the University. It would in no way be permanent, yet, if taken seriously, could open up much of the administration’s eyes to what students are unhappy about.

Autobotography: Photo A Day

2 05 2012

My idea is to create a virtual blog, by taking one, well-thought out and produced photograph for every day of a year, and then publish these, day-by-day, to a blog, to my Facebook, portfolio website, any way I feel would properly distribute the material, for a year. This would be a very interesting way to journal my adventures over the full year.

Autobotography Intent: UMaine Speaks

2 05 2012

My first idea would simply be a campus wide Podcast I could put out that gets the students’ voices heard, and made more public. Each week I could choose a certain topic I felt was pertinent with people our age, be it on a global, national, or just campus-wide issue. From there, I would interview students willing to take part that I found walking around campus, and get their voices heard. It would be a non-biased show, simply only looking to publicize the opinions of the University of Maine students, who probably often go unheard.
The second portion of my idea would be advertisement, figuring out how to get these words further out in the public. I would alert the Campus paper and local news media about it and try to get a growing fan-base from there.

Hactivism Intent: Why I Smoke

2 05 2012

As a non-smoker, myself, I personally find the relatively new zero tolerance tobacco rule on campus is rather absurd. Despite I personally vow to never touch cigarettes, I respect that people do, and have never been bothered by someone smoking more than six feet away from me. That’s why I was thinking of having a large sign in front of the library reading “WHY I SMOKE,” and people can write on it why they enjoy smoking. Despite smoking being harmful to health, I feel in an outdoors area, it is very easy to avoid any second-hand smoke, and this sign may show the freedoms we are taking from people for, presumably, no good reason.

Intent Review: In Case of Emergency Cigarette

2 05 2012
I can’t really say I go along with this idea. As a non-smoker myself, though with friends who smoke, I can’t really see how this would cause someone to lose any of their stress. Your idea basically implies that these people would go to these boxes during very intense and stressful conditions (finals week), and then instead of getting the nicotine they crave, they’re going through what is presumably the far too often hassle of other people telling them what they should or should not be doing. I am not condoning cigarettes nor am I saying people should resort to them as a means of ‘escape’ from stress, I just feel are mature enough at this age to make the decision for themselves, and although I feel trying to help people quit is a good thing, I couldn’t imagine a worse time for that to happen then when you are most in need of your chemical fix, and are denied it.

Intent Review: 8 Bit Game Timeline

2 05 2012
This could be a cool piece to have for yourself, and I could see it working well. I am, however, having trouble trying to visualize exactly how it would end up looking.

SKATE UMaine

25 04 2012

This is the final release of Nick Rollins and my  project: Skate UMaine. It evolved into an interactive map that shows skaters on campus some of the best spots to skate at. With each spot, viewers can click through to see videos and photos of other UMaine students skating at these spots, as well as a 1-5 star scale as to the likelihood of being kicked out of each spot by local security.

Shea Flynn Ski Edit

29 03 2012

As a skier, most of the action sports movies I watch are ski movies, because of this, despite that we are making a skateboarding film, a lot of the techniques and ideas I have, especially as far as the film-making from an artistic standpoint, will be drawn from inspiration I get from ski movies, such as this edit from a personal friend of mine, Shea Flynn.

NMD 205 Second Variation

28 03 2012

Song Made from Random Lyrics Reinterpretation

Song: “Careful” By Guster

Number: 8

Words:

You

Your

Down

Hands

The

You

The

Others

Be

You’ll

The

These

You

Turned

Their

Where

You

The

Others

Be

You’ll

The

Make

I’m

Don’t

Adore

You

Careful

Try

New Song:

@font-face { font-family: “Cambria”; }p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: “Times New Roman”; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; }

You never know to expect,

When you mix your song up

And down, with words, no less.

So join hands, my friends,

Let the rhythm guide you,

As you create your art.

The world may scoff,

Others may think,

“What is this supposed to be?”

You’ll always know,

These random words,

You let the dice decide.

I turned on the refrigerator

Their faces shot up,

“Where did this refrigerator come from?”

You laugh and scoff,

The best in the group,

Others should feel honored to be included in your scoop.

Be all that you can be.

You’ll notice that line, didn’t make sense.

The point of this poem is randomness,

Make a rhyme with words you don’t choose.

I’m pretty bad at this shit,

Don’t judge me.

I adore kittens,

You should too,

Be careful, they’re gentle like mittens,

Try not to step in their poo.

Tools

27 03 2012

We will be working with HD video cameras, some involving different lenses for added effect such as fish eye lenses. From there we will work with Final Cut on editing the video together, as well as After Effects for some special effects, and whatever other programs we may need in order to create the video we would like to create.

Research

27 03 2012

We have been talking about and watching different skate videos in order to come up with creative editting techniques and special effects to use in our video. One video in which we were both very interested in is the edit in Girl’s video “Yeah Right!” In which there is a segment with “invisible skateboards,” presumably through the use of green screens or a similar technology. This is something we both think would be very cool to figure out and would like to try to work with.

Peers

27 03 2012

I will be working with Nick Rollins on shooting and editing the footage, and will also be skating with a small group of Nick’s regular skating friends in order to get new footage.

Format

27 03 2012

Like I said, this will end up being a video edit of skateboarding. We already have access to a lot of footage, and plan to continue getting more. From there, we are going to try to amp up our video by adding effects that will make it our own. We have researched innovative ideas by both of us simply having an avid history of skateboarding films. We have talked about creative ideas that we both like from videos we’ve seen and tried to build off of that to see what we think we could do to make our video unique.

Final Project Content

27 03 2012

My final project for 206 is going to be a skateboarding edit between myself and Nick Rollins. I have not been an avid skateboarder for a number of years, but it has always been a part of my life, as well as Nick still being a frequent skater with many of his friends. On top of my history of being a dedicated skater, I have always been an enthusiast of any action sport, and being a film enthusiast, working for an action sports production company, most likely preferably skiing as it is my favorite sport, but I can not get past my deep nostalgic love for skateboarding, and I am excited to see what I can do with this.

Edge of Art: Video Game Recruitment

12 03 2012

“The designers claim a
number of features that make this military tactical-
action game authentic: 1. it’s based on actual US
Army infantry doctrine; 2. its advanced AIsimulates
the behavior of soldiers in intense combat
conditions; 3. rules of engagement simulate real-
world conditions; 4. weapons reflect those currently
in use by the US Army; 5. soldier animation is based
on live footage of combat veterans. ”

1) This quote shows that the Army obviously has a lot invested in their video game recruitment methods. It also shows that they are not only interested in creating an entertaining experience, but also a very realistic (not to mention propaganda-rich) experience. It’s no secret that in today’s world, a shooter video game is going to draw attention from young men.

2)  How important was it to have a realistic feel?

What made them to choose to do one thing as opposed to another? What aspects did they decide to omit.

How Occupy Wall Street Changes Everything

16 01 2012

1) With the Occupy Movement, the 99%’s interests can no longer be ignored. A political power with the force of millions has been created and issued invitations to a new world.

2) The Occupy Movement is a horizontal power because there is no chosen leader, each member has equal power, which fractures our status quo because we have never had a political group like this. The People’s Mic is an example of new media.

The World Need You to see it with Fresh Eyes

16 01 2012

1) I feel the media tends to paper over the war in Iraq. There are several, less popular vehicles that seem to focus on a much truer war than I feel is generally shown to us in the news. The media tries to facade the truths of war in order to keep the people in support of its government.

2) In most cases, we are expected to ‘sit back and enjoy the show’ with our government, because we are aiming to elect competent leaders to take over for us. Times such as if in a group project a leader is not stepping up is when you can ‘grab the wheel.’

What is New Media? Vin Crosbie

16 01 2012

1) The three transportation media are land, water, and air. The difference between a transportation vehicle and a transportation media is that vehicles are used to convey use of media.

2) The three communication media are the Interpersonal Medium, the Mass Medium, and and ‘New Medium.’ Some examples of communication vehicles and media are a TV or radio used to convey mass media, or an e-mail being used to convey Interpersonal Medium.

3) Interpersonal Medium:

Pros:

  • Each participant has equal and reciprocal control of content
  • Content can be individualized

Cons:

  • The equal control degrades into cacophony as the number of participants increases

Broadcast Communication:

Pros:

  • Can simultaneously deliver message to almost infinite number of people

Cons:

  • Message can not be individualized to receipeant
  • Content controlled only by one person

4) Individualized information can be simultaneously delivered to an almost infinite number of people

-Each of the people involved have equal control of all content

Without technology, this would be an unaccessible medium, such as the sky.
