Yes Men

2 05 2012

Yes Men was a very entertaining movie to me, for a while, but it soon lost its taste. I feel the movie would have been much better had it lasted, say, forty-five minutes, but the further the Yes Men brought us into their film, the more I started to think they were not much more than immature douche bags. I respect everything they did with the ‘Golden Skeletons’ and the fake BBC report, but after those two sequences, they just seemed to spiral downward in their lies and it simply became childish. I agree with what they try to do, but I feel they should start to realize when enough is enough and take a defeat.

Audience

2 05 2012

Originally, I feel like my audience was sort of lacking, being that Nick and my idea did not really have a lot too it. It was a simple video that we probably would have put on Facebook and receive karma in the form of ‘likes.’ Now, our project actually has a clearly defined audience, as the incoming students, and others who may not know where to skate on campus.

Did I Achieve My Goals?

2 05 2012

This is kind of a weird question to answer. I certainly feel that I achieved in creating a worthy project that could very well be applied in the real world, or at the least the University of Maine world. In spite of this Nick and I really created a video that was not really what either of us had expected. We went into this project thinking we would make a video and mostly try to accomplish cool visual effects with it. This would have been a fun project, but did not really fit the assignment. It really had no direction, other than being a video.

We tried to create a project that could actually be used in the world around us, something that could actually serve a purpose. That is when we had the idea of an interactive map, using the help of the website Prezi, that could show the local students where to skate on campus.

I feel like this new direction was a good change, and I’m happy to have learned to think of new ways in which to give my work a ‘purpose.’

Autobotography Example: Where the Hell is Matt?

2 05 2012

This may easily be one of my favorite examples of autobotography. The creator takes a collection of all of the amazing places in the world that he has encountered in his life, and from it, creates a very fun and honestly awe-inspiring video. He is able to show all of the incredibly beautiful and unique places that we have on our planet. He was able to even evoke a bit of remorse out me, as I wonder why I don’t have the opportunity to see all of these things, and experience life to the level that Matt has.

Autobotography Example: Noah Takes a Photo of Himself

2 05 2012

This is a famous viral video that is most definitely an example of autobotography. The creator, “Noah” dedicates six years of his life to record the transformation that we go through as humans. It is definitely in the sense of autobotography, as he has created it himself, and shows the changes he himself undergoes throughout these six years.

Hactivism Example: Occupy Wall Street

2 05 2012

One of the best examples of hactivism, at least in our current time is that of the Occupy Movement. Occupy is hactivism because it breaks into the open and speaks the word of how the world should be working. They go out into public places, and do not inflict any harm, rather they celebrate being in a society work to change the world, so that we may see how real human interaction and human life were meant to work.

Hactivism: Anonymous

Anonymous is a secretive hactivism group that is widely known for hacking into some of the most secure systems in the world, and fighting back, as the say, for the people. This video relates to the negative feedback Anonymous received after they shut down the PlayStation Network due to processes Sony did with the Network that many believe to be unnecessary, such as storing IP Addresses of users. Anonymous held control over the PlayStation Network for several weeks, as a means to severely hurt the income of Sony, but as you can see, some do not agree with the reaches Anonymous will make to fight for the people.

Hactivism: Chalk Protest

2 05 2012

I was thinking of an idea of writing in large letters “What is wrong with this University?” in chalk in front of the Union, and then leaving a large box of chalk, allowing for people to vent and complain about any problems they have with the University. It would in no way be permanent, yet, if taken seriously, could open up much of the administration’s eyes to what students are unhappy about.

Autobotography: Photo A Day

2 05 2012

My idea is to create a virtual blog, by taking one, well-thought out and produced photograph for every day of a year, and then publish these, day-by-day, to a blog, to my Facebook, portfolio website, any way I feel would properly distribute the material, for a year. This would be a very interesting way to journal my adventures over the full year.

Autobotography Intent: UMaine Speaks

2 05 2012

My first idea would simply be a campus wide Podcast I could put out that gets the students’ voices heard, and made more public. Each week I could choose a certain topic I felt was pertinent with people our age, be it on a global, national, or just campus-wide issue. From there, I would interview students willing to take part that I found walking around campus, and get their voices heard. It would be a non-biased show, simply only looking to publicize the opinions of the University of Maine students, who probably often go unheard.
The second portion of my idea would be advertisement, figuring out how to get these words further out in the public. I would alert the Campus paper and local news media about it and try to get a growing fan-base from there.

Hactivism Intent: Why I Smoke

2 05 2012

As a non-smoker, myself, I personally find the relatively new zero tolerance tobacco rule on campus is rather absurd. Despite I personally vow to never touch cigarettes, I respect that people do, and have never been bothered by someone smoking more than six feet away from me. That’s why I was thinking of having a large sign in front of the library reading “WHY I SMOKE,” and people can write on it why they enjoy smoking. Despite smoking being harmful to health, I feel in an outdoors area, it is very easy to avoid any second-hand smoke, and this sign may show the freedoms we are taking from people for, presumably, no good reason.

Intent Review: In Case of Emergency Cigarette

2 05 2012
I can’t really say I go along with this idea. As a non-smoker myself, though with friends who smoke, I can’t really see how this would cause someone to lose any of their stress. Your idea basically implies that these people would go to these boxes during very intense and stressful conditions (finals week), and then instead of getting the nicotine they crave, they’re going through what is presumably the far too often hassle of other people telling them what they should or should not be doing. I am not condoning cigarettes nor am I saying people should resort to them as a means of ‘escape’ from stress, I just feel are mature enough at this age to make the decision for themselves, and although I feel trying to help people quit is a good thing, I couldn’t imagine a worse time for that to happen then when you are most in need of your chemical fix, and are denied it.

Intent Review: 8 Bit Game Timeline

2 05 2012
This could be a cool piece to have for yourself, and I could see it working well. I am, however, having trouble trying to visualize exactly how it would end up looking.
